I've looked on several websites and applied for little things here and there, but I feel like I'm getting no where. Can somebody share with me how they applied and recieved scholarships and/or grants (I'm not sure if they're the same thing or not.) Oh and how far in advance should I apply before I hope to recieve the scholarship money?

Thank You

  1. Maybe you can try below website to get the information you need. It's about scholarships articles for your second opinion.

  2. Grants are almost always need based.  Try applying through the department of Education, via the FAFSA website.

As for scholarships, each scholarship has its own set of rules, requirements and eligibility standards.  I have heard lots of success in applying through fast web for scholarships.  Be very careful when applying for scholarships, and remember, no scholarship application will cost you money.  If it does, it is a scam.

You should begin applying for scholarships about a year prior to your first date of attendance.  Some scholarships have set finite deadlines to help you determine the priority level of the scholarships you are applying for.

I hope this helps, and best of luck

  3. Most scholarships require that you complete a FAFSA and have it on file at the school of your choice. All federal and state aid is based then on the FAFSA determination.

If the scholarship is merit-based or based on other factors besides need, a FAFSA is not essential. However, the funds are sent through to the school you are attending and applied as part of your financial aid package.

If the school awarded you, say, $5000 in aid and you got a scholarship of $1000 from an outside source, the school's aid package would be reduced to $4000 and the $1000 scholarship added to it. The total aid would still be $5000 but the sources would change.

Talk to a Financial Aid Advisor at the school for more information about aid and opportunities.
