How do I apply gel coat to a boat to remove stratches.?

  1. I believe you want to apply a very very fine sandpaper or rubbing compound to remove scratches from gelcoat.

    Unless of course they're very very deep.


  2. jtexas is as usual on top of this.  Gel coat is difficult to spray, because its a catalyzed thick coating, and if you thin it, it runs and the cracks show through.  However, Gel coat as applied at the factory is quite thick, thus you can often wet sand and buff-out most smaller scratches and cracks.  Gel coat tends to crack because the glass flexes and the resin is relatively hard.

  3. Jtexas has got it, if the scratches are deep, prep the area with acetone, tape off the scratch, and use a disposable syringe to apply the gel.  Then sand flat with 600 wet paper, and buff with rubbing compound.
