I'm not sure if I need to heat the back of the felt before I put it down, I know I need to heat the joint

  1. yeah,, its a good idea.

  2. no you don't need to heat it overlap the bottom row and staple it down if you heat it you will cook the tar out of it

  3. just remember to start at the bottom and leave at least 4" overlap for the top sheets to stop water creeping back up, called capillary attraction,

you can either use galvanised clout nails or a water proofing compound on the joints, felt is by nature and manufacture self sealing when punctured by nails, do not heat it as it will crack and splinter.

if you do want to use heat then get a bitumen block and heat it with a blowtorch and spread it on the joint as you are laying it. PC4 is a recognised sealing compound in a block or any rubber based solution will paint on.

nails are fine any thing else is "belt and braces"

if in doubt leave "6 overlap and double stagger your clouts.
