How do I approach a abused sun conure?

I purchased a sun conure "Mango" and its previous owner was very abusive and down right cruel to this beutiful animal. When Mango would not get in his cage she would slap it off his it. I am a owner of a lesser sulfur crested cackatoo "Juno" and have had it since it was young so i dont know much about taming a abused bird because Juno has had a luxurious life and we have a great companionship. I want the same for Mango and I, but i am not sure how to approch him for the simple reason I want him to trust me and dont want to be to aggresive in taming him. Any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated by Mango and myself. Thanks

  1. Well give the bird some time to get used to living with you at first not trying to handle the bird right away. Respect the bird when it tries getting away from you because it will never forget what has happened to it. I will warn you to make sure your cockatoo doesn't begin imitating the conure's behavior if kept in the same room with each other. Take your time and play it by ear and don't get your feelings hurt if the bird never does warm up to you. For what you already know about the bird's history this will help you to understand why it acts the way it does and may never change.

  2. When I worked in a pet shop, we would sometimes get very scared birds that needed taming. The best advice I gan give you is to be patient. You should approach his cage every day and just sweet talk him. No fast movement. IF you can, maybe try offering him some fruits from your hands. If he shows any sign of stress you can just back off slightly. I once had a conure that I could never touch... but spending time with him everyday and slowly taking the steps to touch him are key. If you can find some bird yogurt drops or something he loves... and use that as a treat when he responds kindly to you.
