How do I ask for a raise on a commission based income from my Dad?

My Dad is a Land Surveyor and he needs rebar cut into 18 and a 1/10 inch "pens". Now, he buys a ton of rebar from a place and brings it to our house. Each "stick" of rebar is about 20 foot long and I get 13 cuts off of each "stick". The sticks way about 14 lbs. a piece, so technically there would be like 143 sticks in the ton he buys for 750 bucks. He sells the 18 inch pen to his boss for a dollar a piece, 25 at a time. I have to cut 2 sticks in order to make 25 basically. I get 10% of whatever he gets from his boss for the "pens". i.e. 25 pens, I get 2.50. It takes me about 30 minutes to cut 25 "pens". So 5$ an hour, under minimum wage. I want to ask for a raise, but he keeps saying no. He gets roughly 1900$ a ton off of the work I do. I get ten percent, 190$. I think that maybe 20% would be a less-then-generous raise but he still says no. Should I say **** him and go find another way to make money or stick with what I got? I am 14, so its kind of hard to get a job....

  1. Yeah I think your making pretty good money. If you think the pay is unfair, I would go on strike. but your not paying rent, your not paying for your own food, maybe you do have to buy your own clothes and entertainment but your not getting the short end of the stick.

I say just enjoy the money you're getting and when your old enough to get a job somewhere else then maybe you can make a little more. Working at Mcdonalds or a grocery store your pay would probably average out to what your making now since you would be paying income tax and social security and you probably could only work 4 hrs a day maybe 3 days a week since your in school.

  2. FIRST GET A DNA TEST...THEN GET BACK TO US

  3. hello - since you have no other costs (food, rent, heat etc.) this is a fair wage.  Hes covering all that for you after all.  And more or less giving you an income of $190 per ton.  (assuming this is cash, no taxes either)  He could after all ask you to do it for free, to cover the cost of what he pays for you already.

Heres what I might consider doing -

If you have a goal you are saving for I might set up a budget:

    retirement - 15%

    goal - 85%

(If you tithe add that in as a line etc.)

I would start now with saving for retirement, as the value of compound interest is huge!  If you start now whatever you contribute will be tons by the time you are ready to retire.  And it will show him you are thinking ahead, learning how to save etc.

then show him how much you need to make for whatever it is you want, and how long it will take at your current rate of pay.  Then ask him what else you can do to earn more so you can get there faster.  Or use that as leverage on why you think the value of your work is worth more, and go for a 3% raise, which was more or less the average increase for workers in america last year.  Do some research to back up that number (ir if the average increase in KY was more last year use that number) and see what he says.

    Good luck
