  1. I would absolutely ask. You'll get more results by asking than by hinting. Especially if you work with men. (No offense intended - their brains are just wired differently is all.)

    Go around and quietly let everyone know that tomorrow you'll come around with a sympathy card for them to sign & would they please have a couple or five dollars to contribute. Next day, go around with the card. Let them sign their name & if they have a dollar or five, they'll give it to you. Some might still forget, but I doubt anyone will outright refuse. If they do, that's not your problem - that's between them and their Maker.


  2. Check with your manager and see if they would approve of a donation 'can' in a break room.  I wouldn't verbally ask co-workers for donations.  People are easily offended when it comes to money.  You don't want to create an awkward situation between your co-workers, and yourself.
