Question:

How do I ask my doctor about ADD?

I've always had a problem with paying attention and focusing but I've never really known how to bring it up with a doctor without sounding like a drug seeker or uninformed. On the other hand I don't want to sound like I'm self-diagnosing. I just don't know what to say.

I've noticed this problem for years but still have trouble asking about it.

What can I say that will get him to take me seriously and not think I'm out looking for uppers?

I have an appointment for my stomach tomorrow, but I thought I'd finally find a way to bring it up tomorrow. Any advice?

  1. I have the same problem but i find it hard to bring up these with family.

  2. At your appointment, ask the Doctor if he knows anything about ADD.  Obviously he will answer yes or no and you just opened the door.  He is going to know you are serious approaching it this way.  You can then tell him how you been feeling or the things you do or not do to make you believe you could have this problem.  He will then reply back and tell you how to get help or maybe even be able to help you right then and there.

Don't worry about ADD, it is very common and it doesn't mean you are different.  Try to do several things a day that you really like and this will help you stay focussed.  Good luck...

  3. I'm sorry, what was your question?  :)

Just ask, that is what you are paying him for

  4. Unless you bring it up, you will never know what level of" busy brains" is in the normal range.   Sometimes I am so distracted by what I should be doing.... that I get worn out with out getting  AnYtHiNg done.

  5. Take an online questionaire for ADD and then print the results and take to your doctor.  That might be easier if you are afraid to just bring it up to him.

  6. Try asking the doctor if he/she thinks your problems with paying attention and focusing are A.D.D.  You bring it up by bringing it up.  There is no magic way to do it and the doctor can only diagnose what he is told about or can see.

  7. Say hey Doc I suspect I have ADD he will ask you why and then you can give him your examples. Write down your examples so you don't forget to mention anything.

  8. Normally at the end of the appointment they always ask if you have any questions. Just tell him that you've been having trouble concentrating and give him some examples. Doctors love to listen. Then he'll go from there.
