I just currently started working a new sitter job. It is only two days a week but each day i drive their child to different activites. One of them being very far away. Before i started gas money was mentioned, that i would be gettin it, not a price but that i would recieve something. My first week I did. since then I have not. I seriously go through anywhere from a quarter tank to a 1/2 tank of gas and with gas prices rising it is not something I am willing to let slide.

How should i mention something to the parents? also is there a way i can know how much I would be getting, asking a certain amount per mile? how much would that be?

  1. just like you just did.  or give them a reciept for your gas.

  2. Find out the current rate for mileage reimbursement from someone who works at a company.  For example, it might be 55 cents per mile.  Then keep a log of your miles and present the employer with the amount you need for reimbursement.  Just say "The current rate is ___ and I drove your children ____ miles this week. As you know, gas is very expensive and I cannot afford to cover this cost for you."

  3. I would ask them casually if you should be keeping mileage. We all know that gas is ridiculous and I would even say that my last employer had me keep mileage and would base reimbursement on that. Last I new it was .15 a mile but that was about 3 years ago and gas has gone up a ton since then.

  4. find out the miles per gallon your car gets by filling the car completely, and then fill up when it falls on empty. do yhis about 5 times, and divide miles from  your last fill to this one by the amount of gallons you just filled...then track the miles you drive the kids in a log, and charge according to the gallons you used strictly working for the family...tell the parents this is the weekly gas usage for transporting your children, please add the sum to my wages. Vola! round up a couple of dollars..like 2-3 each time for wear and tear....with all the dirt, food, and miles your car sees, you amy need it

  5. I would just tell them that you can not afford to driver her/him around anymore because the gas price is rising!

And that if they still expected you to do it that you would like to be reimbursed through milage or through an amount you both think is reasonable.

  6. I don't know about your car--but half a tank in my car is 15 to 20 dollars.

Just tell them flat out that either you need some gas money, or you cannot watch their children anymore. Explain that you can't keep up with the rising gas prices and would like x-amount of money each week for gas. I would suggest 20 dollars, but it kind of depends on where you live and how much gas costs in your area.
