Question:

How do I avoid close work stress from minus lens when I have severe myopia already?

I have a concern here. My myopia is at -10 diopters on both eyes. When I read, I must wear strong minus lens, but I hear that wearing full-strength minus lens while doing near work will make myopia worse and that positive lens glasses might help. What can I do? How can I wear two lens at the same time? If I get eye surgery to get implantable corrective lens and then get plus lens glasses, will that help? Will the minus lens implants intefere with the plus lens glasses? I appreciate any help on this.

  1. I have a -6.50 in both eyes. I have a progressive multifocal that addresses my near vision needs quite well. I also have a reading glass that is a -4.75 that are my reading glasses. They give me less minus power (more plus) and I can read without the eye strain. This is the same as giving me plus power magnification, you just add it to the existing RX. WHen I have my contacts in to correct my distance I use a plus power reader. Your doctor might be able tot ell you what is the best for you here. Have a great weekend!

  2. Depending on your age you may be ready for a bifocal. Age 40 is the most common age for people to start to lose accommodation, the ability to read. However, many very nearsighted people can go a few years more before that happens. So, this requires a bifocal that will reduce your current near sighted correction to allow your eyes to focus at near. To avoid a bifocal you could get just reading glasses, but that becomes a nuisance switching glasses. Best thing is to have a new eye exam and relate to your doctor your concerns.  As far as corrective surgery, you generally just need  to put readers on, as your distance correction should no longer be an issue.
