How do I avoid dirt roads when using GPS?

I recently bought a Magellan Maestro 3225 from Costco. Every time I use it to calculate a route it suggests dirt roads which are not fast at all? Is there any way to avoid dirt roads or should I return this and buy another brand?

  1. You know how there is a map and the route the GPS wants you to take is highlighted? Look on the map to see if there is any way around the road.

  2. Check to see if your GPS receiver is set to calculate the fastest route or the shortest route.  If it is set for "Fastest," I would think the GPS receiver would know the dirt road is slow and should be avoided.

I have become less enamored with Magellan over time.  I have owned several Magellan devices, but I quit recommending them a couple of years ago.  They seem to be more trouble-prone than other brands now, and their customer support is of little help when you do have trouble.
