I'm 19. I decided to start my own business, offering computer assistance. This is my first job.

Because I have no employer, and this is my first job, my SIN (Social Insurance Card) has never been used.

I don't want to go to jail, please help!

  1. Just report your income on your taxes-there's a space for 'additional income.'

You don't even have to include any documentation (though they may ask for some, so you should keep records).

Unless you're making massive amounts of money, I doubt you'd go to jail over this..if your income is low, you don't even have to pay any additional taxes.

  2. You are considered having a self-employed business.  YOu need to keep records (revenue and expenses), register your business with the Canada Revenue Agency, collect GST for your services performed, remit tax instalment in future, etc.  Here is the CRA link for your further reference:http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/menu-e...

  3. To avoid tax evasion, pay your taxes in full and on time.

thanks -- that was the easiest question I answered all day ;)

If you have been collecting GST, you need to remit that GST.

Since you are Self Employed, you need to keep very good records on all of your income and expenses.  When tax time comes, pick up the special package for Self Employment Income.  Fill out the necessary paperwork and submit it to Rvenue Canada.  Voila -- no worries about evading taxes.

You probably WON'T get a tax package, but there is nothing stopiing you from picking one up at the Post Office.
