  1. practice practice practice

  2. go apply @ a night club, get a collection of music and be prepared to make a presentation

  3. First you have to decide what kind of DJ you want to be.  There is a 100 different solutions dedicated to the final result of having music come out of the speakers.

If you want to be a HIP-HOP DJ, be prepared to be on the mic a lot, hyping up the crowd.

If you want to be a "House" or "Dance DJ", be prepared to be more involved in beatmixing, and collecting transitional music.  (music that moves you from one beat per minute range to another)

Most traditional Night Club DJ's use a technique called "beat mixing" to hide the transition of one song to another (with the result of hopefully keeping the dance floor).  This is accomplished by finding media (songs) that are specially made for beatmixing or creating their own mixes at home.  There are remix services like Ultimix, or Showstoppers that specialize in remixing songs solely for that use.

Once you decide what style you want to do, then it's just a matter of practicing.  You will need to know what a measure is, and will need to be able to count out a measure in your sleep.  A measure is most commonly defined in dj'ing as a 32 count.  A 64 count is 2 measures, etc.

Beat Mixing is complicated, but once it's mastered, it is easy as patting your head, and rubbing your belly.   Beat Mixing is just playing a measure from one song, over a measure of another.  Once the beat is synchronized, holding it, and then moving transitioning over to the new song.

Typically, you hold the downbeat of the measure of the new song, until the last measure (or break) in the current song is playing.  "Dropping" the new song on top of the old one so that the tempo and drums match each other and moving the fader to the middle so both songs can be heard together.  Once the measure(s) are completed, slide the fader all the way over, and you are completely into the new song.

You will need to learn the intros and the breaks and the outro to all the songs you want to play.  knowing the song is just as important as the ability to beatmix.

There are 100 sites and tutorials on beatmixing.  I'd explain it more here, but I think there is a word limit.  Also, there are different beatmixing styles for different types of music.  Techno overlays longer that house and top-40.
