  1. First, you have to be able to lie to people and take advantage of them without feeling any remorse.

Then you have to learn how to "use" a bunch of scientific instruments with fluctuating gauges and blinking lights.  By "use", I really mean "push buttons and look concerned".

It helps if you are a good actor.

  2. You can just declare yourself one, like becoming a Wizard or a Ghost hunter or a psychic.  I doubt you will find it an economically viable activity.

  3. If you say you are you are. It's that simple.Explaining your new occupation to your parents will be the hard part.Don't put that job down on a credit application either.

  4. First you must decide if you want a Thrill, or if you are in it for a real reason. There is a difference in Hunters and Investigators

  5. Rent a cheap office, put up a sign. Memorize a few keywords from a new age group book and you're in business

  6. First I would suggest looking into the possibility of joining a group in your area. The web site http://www.haunted-places.com lists organizations arranged by state.

Secondly, the book "The Paranormal Investigators Handbook" edited bt Valerie Hope and Maurice Townsend is a good introduction on how to conduct simple investigations.

Thirdly, while there are no professional paranormal investigators (the professors from Cambridge University that started the Society for Psychical Research were not professional investigators either) there are parapsychologist that study exceptional human abiities like ESP and PK. The Parapsychological Association http://www.parapsych.org is the professional organization representing these individuals and the web site list several of their members education (usually PhD's and MD's) The PA has been an affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1969.

Most parapsychologist suggest a background in the traditional sciences (physics, chemisty, biology) or one of the social sciences (psychology, anthropology, sociology) and then pursuing your interest in parapsychology applying the knowledge and methods of your chosen field to parapsychology subjects.

Lastly, now that I have actually answered a question asked here and provided accurate information for you let the bad ratings from the skeptics begin.

    Michael John Weaver, M.S.

  7. First, understand "paranormal".

  8. Well, one answerer was being sarcastic, but actually it really is basically if you claim to be one you are. Yes you can read books, go to workshops and take home study courses to become a Certified paranormal Investigator, all that is okay, but the reality is that all these paranormal investigators are just weekend enthusiasts.

I hate the way people in my interest throw that word "Professional " around.

There are no professionals in this interest as far as people that have degrees related to this, it is just a hobby and that is fine, but way too many claim to be scientists when really it is just a hobby.

There are websites that teach their theories and the only one I can recommend is the IGHS

    http://www.ghostweb.com/

But really just go to haunted sites, visit places that claim paranormal activity and take pictures and record for EVP and that is pretty much all there is. Just beware of dust and rain and be sure before claiming any or like object as paranormal you rule out all natural possibilities. That is one good thing about the IGHS they are the only ones who really teach how to rule out natural anomalies.

Oh, and don't get caught up in that idea that some have that you will take that one picture or record that one EVP that will rock the world and prove ghosts exist.

I go further in my investigations in that I research miracles and spiritual things also because after all if we can document a bonified miracle that is paranormal also.

    Have fun.
