How do I become a Reading Specialist?

I've taught in the regular classroom for the last seven years.

  1. I don't think it's nationally consistent, but where I live in Minnesota, it's a graduate certificate/Master's degree program.  You could call the Department of Education in your state to find out about their certification requirements, but it will most likely involve more schooling.


  2. There is a Reading Specialist program in the Masters in Education Curriculum.  Check your local university.

  3. Pursing a master's degree in reading education or curriculum and instruction would be a good start.  Check with your school district's requirements for the Reading Specialist position.
