I have always played outside, but my coach saw me set this summer and said I would make a great setter. Any way I made varsity and have been playing in practice as a setter with two others who have been setting longer than I have. How can I make myself a better setter? Any tips would be great!

  1. First, I would suggest volunteerting to set if your team practices spikes. On our team, we throw the ball to the setter, they set, and then we spike. Try that.

Really, setting just takes some basic practice. Try setting to yourself up against a wall or with a friend. Also, make sure you learn your positions. A setter doesn't follow the same rotation change as every other player does.

  2. Well as a setter, I have to tell you this is one of the hardest positions in sports.

    You have 2 main jobs.

Firstly to get to that second ball almost every time, and secondly put up a hittable ball for your hitters...

You should practise on your mechanics.

For example practice your footwork - sets should come off of the right foot after a hopping motion.

And also make sure you're recieving the ball correctly.

Another thing is TOUCHES. As many as you can. Keep practicing against the wall, try to hit the same brick in the wall over and over...

It would be good to get together with a hitter, and have them give you feedback after each set so that way you will develop your own system.

    Good Luck!=]

  3. I was a setter in JHS HS college and on my club team, I learned the proper technique from my coach then she made me set 100 balls into a basketball hoop from the foul line everyday before I was allowed to practice with the team. ( I had to hit the rim or swish it) I then moved to the 3 point line and after several weeks I had pretty good hands now I needed to learn to get to every second ball possible. So work on agility and quickness. This should help.

  4. first of all, CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING VARSITY!

    that's a huge accomplishment! :D

secondly, hmmm these are some of the steps i take when i set.

1)put your dominant foot out in front of the other(just a little bit)

2)get UNDERNEATH the ball, not behind it.

3)bend your knees! all your power will come from your legs and your sets should be higher and more consistent...height is a big thing because you want the person spiking it to have enough time to take all the steps/ and jump to get to it.

    hope this helps!!

  5. set the ball whenever you can. As a setter, i will be sitting here at the computer setting all the time. Also having good footwork makes up for if you don't have the best hands. Work on your agility and being able to get to the ball fast. And don't worry about the older hitters. You are the setter, you control the game, the other players your coach and especially you should always know that.
