I want to become a airline pilot but I don't know where to start. Cathy Pacific does have a Cadet Pilot Programme but I am not a Hong Kong resident which wouldn't allow me to apply for it. Does any airlines in New York City have this kind of Cadet Pilot Programme? If not how do I start to become an airline pilot? Are there any flight schools in New York City that would help me get my license and get hired by major airlines? I wish New York City have a Cadet Pilot Programme.

  1. Generally, one gets the private license at any flight school.  check phone book.  You may find grunt work there to help you stay the course thru the necessary licenses.

The idea is to acquire a Flight Instructor's license, and build up flight hours as an instructor until an airline takes you on.  It's probably a long shot to pick your locale.  There are also colleges that have flying as part of the curriculum.  Check pages in Flying magazine.  Go to airports and talk to owners and pilots.  You have to really want to do it to have success, and times are hard with the fuel costs.  But it has always been up-and-down for one reason or another.  That's what I would do if I was young.

    you may find

  2. You won't find any cadet programs in the United States or anybody that will pay for your training.  There are simply too many pilots competing for the same jobs for the airlines to justify spending that kind of money.  You basically have two options.

    1. Pay for it yourself - get a loan or win the lottery, and go to a flight school and start pounding out the certificates and privileges like most others have done.  It's very expensive and requires a lot of dedication and hard work.

    2. Join the military (assuming you're a US citizen).  If you're lucky enough to get assigned a flight spot in one of the branches, they'll pay for your training.  You're taking a risk though...if you don't get a flight spot, you're still stuck in the military for quite a while.  You'll also have to become an officer in order to fly in the military, which is a much longer training process than enlisting is.

If you really want to do it, you can find a way.  The road is tough, but dedication will get you through the rough times.  Good luck.

  3. You have to go to flight school.  In USA the best flight schools are in florida and Arizona, Nevada area (for the good weather).

It cost about the same as going to college.  The only thing you should know is that there's no guarantee of any job after you graduate.  That depends on how well you do, and what is the state of the economy when you graduate.  There's way to say you will get a job in and around NYC.

Pilots mostly take any job they can get when they graduate.  They don't much care as long as they get to fly.  Some choice jobs only come with experience and seniority.

    Good Luck...

  4. You don't have to go to a flight school to get flight instruction.

Go out to Farmingdale and get started with flight training.

Having only your Commercial and Multiengine credentials will not get you on with any airline.
