I am a taekwondo fighter and need to work on my speed with my kicks in my fighting. Any drills/exercises I could do along with normal sparring training to get my speed up? Answers needed!

  1. YEAH! do you know how to do squats? if yes then you do squats with heavy weight and try to jump as high as you can until fatigue and you will build up strength thus building up speed.

  2. I would recommend resistance training with the exercise tubes.  This allows you to work on both the positive and negative force for each kick.  It's easy for many of us to kick a single kick pretty fast, however in Olympic style sparring, multiple kicks are key.  Being able to kick quickly and then bring that kicking leg down quickly to prepare for a second kick or a counter-step is essential.  The resistance bands will help you work on that negative force, the force that helps you chamber your kick.

  3. Buy a weight jacket, ankle, and wrist weights, train with those on ( cardio, hard running, distance running, edndurance, practice your punching and kicking) all with the weights on, but becareful, GRADUALLY increase the weight of the weights, as they come in sets most of the time, but be warned, if you do too juch at once, or when your not ready for it, these kinds of weights can cause structuarl damage to your body. You must be in great shape before starting to use the weight vest, ankle weights, and wrist  weights. I reccomend that you way at least 160-170 lbs, at least, drink milk, and protein to strengthen your bones, be mostly muscle BEFORE USING THESE WEIGHTS.

  4. just keep practising, the more you muscles in your legs develop, the faster the kicks you'll be able to throw!

  5. circuit training, alot of cardio,

  6. this is a home exercise that i got for ya. if you want to, go get ankle weights at a store (preferably 5 pounds for each leg) and practice kicking something and also practice jumping up as high as you can and bring your legs up as far as you can in the process. you can also do this at your gym/dojo if you can get permission.

  7. Buy the ankle and wrist weight sets from walmart for like 20 bux and fight with those on. When you take them off you'll feel like you can't control your speed.

  8. alot of fighters like to do drills in the pool. .like blitzes and punches and kicks, this not only can increase your speed but also your endurance.  Do suicide drills  with running and lots of pad work kicking intervals with duck walking then kicking jump rope,  kicking and more kicking.

  9. Practice, practice, practice. If you want your kicks to be faster there are a couple of things that I did and that I teach students to do.

You always need to stretch. Stretch everyday before and after class. Stretch at home while watching t.v.. Being limber is a key to being able to snap those kicks out there. I don't mean you have to be able to do the splits. I mean for you to be as limber as you body allows.

Practice doing your kicks step by step in slow motion. For example..a mae geri or front kick, first start with your fighting stance. Next in slow motion bring your knee up or chamber your leg. Step two extend your leg as if to strike your target. Step three chamber your leg back. Finally set your foot back down to where you are in your fighting stance again. This works with technique, muscle memory, and balance.

Then throw each kick and hold it in the air at your best highth for a count of 3 seconds to start with and progress up to 5 sec.,8 sec, etc. Do this, as above, for 10 times each leg. This works on muscle tone and balance.

Now practice them fast 10 times on each leg. Always use good technique when practicing. Remember though in a street fight you more than likely won't be able to use good technique or make them pretty.

Most sparring rounds that I have seen last 2 minutes in duration for amateurs. Get someone to help you by timing you. Throw as many kicks as you can in 2 minutes. Do this timed excercise twice weekly and see how your speed improves. I at one point threw 212 kicks in 2 minutes. That's 212 kicks in 120 seconds. Lately my best is 187 kicks in 2 minutes.

Good luck with your kicks but don't neglect your hands either, they too are very important. I hope if you try some or all of these excercises you can improve in some way that you find satisfactory. Again good luck.

P.S. Don't try kicks out of your skill level. This can cause you to pick up bad habits for when you are taught this kick.

  10. you might try fighting less experienced people.

  11. Use a timer (a good one) and practice, set goals and more practice

  12. Stop fighting with your fists and feet...become civilized.  Stop being so full of yourself and abilities to kill and injure people who may or may not deserve it.

If you become intelligent enough, you'll be able to diffuse any threatening situation not with violence, but with simple syllables.
