How do I become a faster runner??

Im joining the track team in Spring 09 and I want to become faster. Im 13 and I want to run 100m to 400m in track meets. I came in 5th out of 7th last year. Not the best place but how do I become faster?? Also what should I eat to not mess up the process?? I haven't had any fast food this whole summer my goal!!

There's a running game I like to play.  It's called fartleck.  No, really.  It is.  When you're running, select a landmark, for instance a stop sign three blocks away, and run as fast as you can toward it.  When you reach the spot, resume your regular pace.  It's a good way to build speed, and it's' good to build up the muscles of your legs.  Also, it makes running a bit more fun--or at least it does for me.

    If you have a running specialty store in your area, you might go there to get fitted for shoes.  Otherwise, you might try the shoe guides at runnersworld.com.  It's important to make sure the shoes you wear are well-suited for your stride and foot type. Nike, Saucony, New Balance, etc all make good shoes.

  4. Over the next several months build a base by running 30 to 40 minutes. (You can work up to it over several weeks).

    Do some strength training (but carefully since you are only 13).

    Do some fast running - you can speed up during your long runs or you can go to a track and run hard and easy splits (this is interval training).

    Check your school or public library - they probably have books on running.

    You don't need to worry too much about diet but do avoid too much fat (you need some) and too much sugar (and sugar is in lots and lots of things.  Make sure you are getting lean protein especially after workouts.

  5. ok do NOT do 30-40 minutes base if your going to do sprints that will slow down your sprinting not help you at all.

    Yes start hitting the weight room.

    Start doing things such as 6x200 full recovery which works on your pure speed.

    (sprints unlike distance events is mainly your genes there is not much to do if your slow unlike distance where you just have to run more miles)

    drink Gatorade within 30 min of a workout to replace what you burned to help your muscles recover faster.

    Nike,Adidas  are good track spikes. you want  sprint spikes w/o a heel
