  1. Lots of schooling. A good eight years if you ever want to make any money. Or have a good foundation to build a client base on. Its not you just get a degree and now I am able to be a Counseling. While you are getting the degree you have to do Clinicals, somewhat like a nurse. You will be working for little or nothing following getting your degree. You also do alot of soul searching while taking these courses. You find out what you are comfortable in and where you need to improve your skills. You will work in different fields some that you may not agree with or feel uncomfortable in. Either way its a great experience. You will love the field of social working and mental health. Its very rewarding.

  2. You need to go to graduate school and get master's in counseling or related field (such as marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work etc).  Then you have to pass national exam.  Then you apply to a licensure board for your state to be a licensed intern.  You have to do an internship for 2-3 years (the length of internship is different depending on the state) under a licensed supervisor.  After submitting documentation of your internship to the licensure board and getting evaluation, you will officially become a therapist.

  3. In psychology:

-get a bachelors with good grades

-get accepted into a graduate program with a clinical emphasis

-complete a doctorate; in some jurisdictions, a Masters may be acceptable with practical experience

-complete the requirements for certification in your state or province.  That will include a year's internship with a qualified psychologist, a course in ethics and related issues, a general knowlegde exam, and an interview with the board which certifies psychologists.  In many graduate programs, the internship and ethics course are built into the curriculum.

You can also become a councelor through social work and health care programs.
