Question:

How do I become a working diver?

I'm talking about being a diver who works on oil rigs like you might see in "Blood, sweat and rigs" or whatever that show is on the discovery channel. Or maybe a diver who helps with the construction of bridges or something.

Either way, can someone please help me?

Also, how much do they usually get paid?

  1. There are several schools around the world that do commercial diving training.  I don't know of any companies that would hire you without extensive formal training.  At least not that I would feel safe working for.  You would probably start off as support for divers and progress into the diving positions.  They usually get paid VERY well.  However, the reason for the high pay is the very hard work and the dangers involved.  You don't often see old commercial divers.  When I retired from the Navy at 39yo, I was told I was basically too old to even start the trainging by every school I contacted.  Check out any of the diving magazines available and they have ads for schools.  Good luck, and if you go into this profession, remember that it's your life and to be safe.
