Im currently doing a degree in the UK called 'Children Welfare and Society' and am averaging a 2:1.

I have five years experience of working with children with autism, I would love to become an autism specialist.

I have found a course at Birmingham uni which offers a MEd in Autism (children) But Im not sure if this is the route take.

Any ideas how i can become an Autism specialist?

Thanks

  1. ABA Applied Behavioural Analysis specialist (master of certification)

  2. First of all you are on the wrong degree.  You need to be studying psychology  with reference to children with special educational needs.  After that I would recommend the University of Sheffield who offer a PG Dip in 'Language and communication impairments in children, or an MSc in the same. (After all, Autism is a failure of socialisation, communication and imagination).  From there you would perhaps want to pursue a PH.D with a thesis connected to an aspect of autism.

    Hope this helps.

  3. First you would probably need to get your degree in Special Education and then specialize in Autism.  You can take classes to be certified in just that area in addition to your special education degree.

  4. Depends on what spectrum you want to work in. Is it teaching? if so you will need a PGCE in Special Education and a post in a Special school which has a autistic unit. If it more the medical side you will need to specialise in Psychology and get a post within a paediatric unit.

  5. Psychology or social work is usually the route taken by a lot of people who work with those who have autism. To become a specialist you would need a doctorate. The autism course at Birmingham university is a good way into working with autistic people. Sheffield university also run a degree course in autism that is well worth researching. Good luck.
