K, I'm 13(from yesterday), and my dream is becoming an actress. I really want to become an actress, but I live in Canada, and there, well, its not as good in the industry as in USA. I have some experience, I've been in a short movie, and in a couple of plays, but still.

Can u help me by telling how to become an actress

Thanx a lot :)

~Karen~

P.S. If needed, I have wavy brown hair and blue eyes, and 4'10 and I live in Richmond Hill, Ontario

  1. You need lots more experience. You need your parents working hard to make your career happen. You need classes. You need maturity, there are almost no professional roles for young teens.

  2. The above advice is great!  I just returned today from a talent/modeling convention in Fla. (Connections Model & Talent) and really learned a lot.  Some times it comes down to what agents are looking for.  There was one girl who was about 11 or 12 that did a monologue about her parents getting a divorce.  I saw several people wiping their eyes after she was done it was so powerful (me included) but she only won 3rd place in the monologues.  I spoke with her mother during call backs and found out she only got about 3 or 4 call backs from agents.  I was shocked.  She was talented, pretty and had long (past her but) blonde hair.  I guess she just didn't have what they were looking for or something.

Anyway.  The advice we got from several agents was:

    1) do everything you can in your local area to gain experience.  Audition, audition, audition.  Take classes at good schools, through your community arts council etc....  Do this until you've exhausted what's in your region.

    2) be prepared to spend $$$$.  You will have to pay to fly to L.A, or New York to audition, you'll pay for your hotel and expenses.  You'll need a great resume, head shot and possibly comp cards.

    3) don't try to be something you're not.  They like to see kids smiling in their pictures.

    4) get a demo reel of some of your work

    5) be realistic.  For every person who gets a speaking role in a show there are hundreds who may have tried out for that part and would take it in a skinny minute.

    6) practice, practice, practice.  Learn several monolouges of varying lengths and genre.  Practice cold readings.  Film yourself and find ways to improve what you did.

    7) learn to take rejection and criticism.  It's a tough business.

    Good luck!

  3. Well you need to be a little more older..like atleast 17 or 16. You need your parents by your side supporting and etc. You also need some experience like try out for a play or something in your school! And to well know a lot about acting and etc. So relax and well think about what you can do about learning how to become your dream job. You have a long journey ahead of you...

  4. i am 13 as well and i am an aspiring actress except i want to be an actress in Japan, since i am Japanese and feel i want an acting career in Japan.

You should take more acting lessons. I took drama class at my school when i was 10 and when i was 11 and starred in the school play. I am gonna wait till i am about 15-16 to try to get into an agency and book acting jobs.

Acting is not an easy profession to fulfill, but it takes dedication and passion. You can't give up just because its hard, you have to work to get what you want. My advice is to study hard and do a bunch of plays and take a lot of classes. If you want to start now, try to get into an agency and start from there. Acting is a tough job, so it may be hard to do homework and having to wake up arly, maybe a pain in the neck but you can't give up

  5. Hey,

There's plenty of opportunities for actors in Canada, especially in Toronto. I'm guessing since you're 13 you're not in high school yet?

Well then, to get started you might want to consider going to one of the Arts High Schools to get a head-start such as Etobicoke School of the Arts in Etobicoke or Cawthra Park Secondary School in Mississauga. If these aren't an option for you I would recommend that you take all the theatre classes you can at your high school.

Keep being involved in plays and short films if the opportunity arises, experience is important, but also at this time in your life I would concentrate more on training than anything else - good training will stay with you your whole life.

There are some amazing theatre programs in Toronto and all across Canada you can look into after high school such as the ones at York University, George Brown College, Sheridan College and Ryerson University which are among the top in the country. I would recommend going to school in the city you want to work/live in because the contacts that you will make at school will probably help you get work.

The truth about being an actor is that very very few "make it big" (i.e. become famous in a USA-type of way), so if that is what you want, I can't help you, but if you're interested in acting as a career then this is what I recommend. First get the training - not only will you learn new things, but you will meet the people with whom you'll eventually be working with, and then get out there and audition audition audition.

Being an actor is a tough life - there is no job security, lots of rejection, long hours, little pay, and you're constantly looking for your next job. But if you love it, there's nothing better.

    Good Luck.

  6. First, calm down. Acting is not something that happens overnight. Your family has to help you. Try to perform in every play you can... the key point is to be an artist. Just pursue it, perform, perform, perform, in any possible play to get seen by as many people possible and to get the "stage feeling"... You also have to identify a style that you want. A person, group, or company that really make you think "I want to do that". Find a way to practice with their technique (and i said practice in addition to study). practice is finally what will get you on stage in a solid way. Make yourself clear if you want either a JOB or an artistic activity that will make you happy. Being notorious is not necessary being talented, or, even worse, it will make you compromise many ethical things that you might not like to do or act in plays that you dont really like. The commercial circuit not always cross roads with the pure artistic lane, so you have to be focused in what you deeply wish. Best of luck
