How do I become an engineer? Do I need to get a BS or BA first?

...Or can I go to engineering school right after high school?

Please give me an overview of the steps involved.

An engineering major at a university will provide you with general education requirements which include pre-reqs such as calculus for engineering, and then you take the engineering courses in your junior and senior year.  You can get a good job with a BS in Engineering of some kind--mechanical, civil, electrical or others.
