How do I become an engineer on a ship?

I am a recent graduate with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I wish to work on a ship as an engineer. I have no previous experience with ships. Could anyone tell me companies (good ones) that would have positions for someone like me? Would I need additional schooling? Thanks

  1. you would need a marine engineers license from the USCG if you going to sail on a US flagged ship.

  2. The following web page gives an extensive list  with links of shipping companies you could approach

    http://www.hal-pc.org/~nugent/company.ht...

Generally, you have to serve time on board and write the applicable exams  in accordance with International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW).

I would suggest that you view their web page and possibly contact them

    http://www.stcw.org/

I am not sure, but in the past one could get certain exemptions based on your educational qualifications.
