I'm leaving next month for a job as a live-in nanny in MD, I'm in NM. I'll be flying and this move is permanent. I can leave some things behind at my parent's house but they just bought a house and are moving in September. So, I need to leave all the stuff I'm leaving here boxed and ready to move.

WHERE DO I BEGIN??? I'm unorganized and don't know what to do!!

  1. Pack what you believe you need to be a fantastic nanny.  What else you don't need should be pack away ready to be moved with your parents.  You can look in newspapers for free moving boxes.  Look into UPS for moving boxes if there are no free moving boxes in the paper.  If your parents are hiring a moving company, you can let them pack your items for you.

If you already have your new address, ask your employers if you can ship some items to reduce body strain and extra baggage cost when traveling by plane.

  2. Well, first we just passed a law that you and your employer will need to agree upon and sign a contract.  It's nickname is the "Nanny Law."  You should find out what your living conditions will be.  Do you need to supply your own linens?  Will you have a furnished bedroom?  Do you need to supply kitchen items?etc. Also, how big will your bedroom be?  Will you have a seperate, private bath?  IF your room is very small and doesnt have much storage, dont bring too much.

Chances are you will be staying in a room, so just bring your clothing, some personal products for the first few days, make-up, iPod, computer, and maybe a few of your favorite books/DVDs, and pictures.

I would get out the boxes and start putting things in that you know you will not be taking with you.  If you want to skip a step, categorize the boxes first (books, childhood memories, blankets, etc.).  It doesn't get as cold in MD as MN, so you can leave some of your heavier, winter clothing.  Just mark it as such in case you do want that wool sweater or down coat.  After that, go through and pack what you will be bringing.  And then you will be left with a pile that you have to decide to 1) bring with you, 2) store, and 3) trash.

Good luck with your new job.

  3. The boxes you are moving need to be labeled with details. Take the time to list everything that is inside the box.  In the future you may want your parents to mail you some of your stuff. This way they can find just what you want fast. You can put very formal colthes in one box, clothes for hot weather in another.  Try to pack for your new job the same way. Everything grouped together so you can find things easily. Pack one bag to use for the first 3 or 4 days so you don't have to unpack everything when you first get there.
