  1. Draw a plan of the proposed fence, measure accurately,  where posts are to be put in jab a crowbar or such into the ground to see if rocks are there or if t he soil, such as hard clay, is present.  Digging a post hole in hard packed clay can take hours for each hole and require flooding with water.

Learn what type of fence is wanted and the gates and such.Create a materials list of all materials needed , including fasteners then go to your supplier for pricing and advice on how many posts or braces will be needed.  How long will the price of materials be valid for.  Ask about trade discounts.

Figure in costs of transporting materials and getting self and or crew to the job. 2 people working well together can get the job done 3 or more times faster than one working alone.

Labor can be difficult to figure.  If you can get a good hourly rate you might be better off.

what type of finish will be required, if any , and the costs of this.

when making your quote/proposal:  include date of offer,

how long offer will be good for.

Heading should include name and address and such

    I propose to install .............

Be specific in listing materials exactly....manufacturer, type, any names of that particular fencing.  i.e.  45 feet of.......fencing with end posts and ,,,,,,intermediate posts.....such and such gates  etc.

Installation will be done in a workmanlike and timely manner.  Work site will be left clear of project debris.

This proposal is good  for ,,,,,,,days    or up till......date.

Price of project including materials, installation and incidentals will be.....    (then the line above about how long the price is good for)

Payment is expected  ...........when and how?

Will a partial payment on acceptance of bid be required  etc.

    Sign it........

  2. too many variables, pine (wood), chainlink, size, etc etc etc

  3. Determine what type of materials you will use and how much you will need, then compute how much materials will cost.

Estimate how much time it will take. Hopefully you have built fences before. Based on previous experience, decide how many hours you think it will take to build this fence (allow for a few complications just in case). Then decide how much your time is worth and compute the labor cost.

    Materials+labor = your bid.

  4. Have a quote on all materials and double the price.....You will always be close that way........unless you have a major problem to overcome..............like hardpan and rocks(digging holes)..........good luck..........that should get you there.
