Question:

How do I boost my wireless signal and speed for free?

I am using a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN ExpressCard and I am connecting to a local area wireless network. My signal is very low and the speed is at best 11.0 mbps. I also keep getting booted off the network because the signal is so low. I need a FREE way to improve my signal and speed. Thanks!

  1. Well, you cannot do anything to the router since the city owns it. You should just buy your own wireless router. I know Ocean City New Jersey is a wireless hotspot, and their signal only works outside. Try searching for a better signal outside or you gotta get your own router.

  2. Most Municipal wifi is at 11mbs 802.11b, the reason is actually very simple, the backbone isn't going to give you anywhere near that speed anyway. Generally about 1.2-1.5mbs normally so why worry about being connected at 11mbs?  If your signal is low, and you are using an external card, add an antenna!  If your card doesn't support external antennas there are cards that do.  Radio Labs has some great ones. http://radiolabs.com

A directional antenna would even be better, you can aim it at the nearest AP for solid connections. There are small Yagis (like small TV antennas), there are "cantennas", there are even dishes or 'Panel" antennas with really high gains that you can add.

Oh I forgot, you can build a "cantenna" from a coffee can or pringles can.

    Hope that helps

  3. Can't you move closer to the signal source? I cannot think of another free way to boost your own wireless reception.

  4. "For free" is the hard part. You also don't say what kind of network or setup you have. Are you using a router, a laptop, is it your own wifi,is it a shared network (university, hotel), etc? Some of this might not apply, but it may help. Some also do cost money, but if the "free" ways don't work you may have to give in and part with some cash.

    1. Reposition your router. Place the base station centrally on an upper floor, or atop furniture and far from other devices in the house that can cause interference. Change the default signal channel (usually set to 6) to avoid interference with neighbors' network devices

    2. Extend the Antenna. You can buy a booster antenna or try a DYI tinfoil number, like the  "Windsurfer" parabola, which can increase your signal strength several decibels.

    3. Buy a Repeater. Again you have to shell out some money, but it'll extend the signal of your router.

    4. Time for a New Router. Some of the newer models have a stronger signal. Also, make sure all your router software is updated.

    5. Secure Your Router. Be sure your neighbors aren't leeching off you. Enable WPA encryption and limit MAC addresses.

    6. Try NetStumbler. It's free and can detect networks in your area. Maybe there's a better signal than the one you're using.
