Question:

How do I bring my herbs back to life?

I planted basil, sage, and chives a few days ago and now they look like they're dying. The chives look okay but the basil like a green stick with a few sagging leaves and the sage's leaves are curling up. I thought I gave them enough water.

  1. Do you know why they were dying?  Could be they have an insect, not enough light, too much water, not enough.  If you just planted them then they're probably pre-grown.  Are they in the ground or a pot?

One thing about sage, is that plant needs very little water.  And also, make sure most of these guys are drying out completely before watering them again.  The roots need to breathe too.  Try moving them into a better spot and let them dry out.  Then start over.  Watch how much you water.

  2. maybe they need light and water

  3. A lot of plants will sag and appear to be dying after being repotted. (For some reason, I found that certain herbs seem to do this a bit more than other hardier plants).

As long as you watered them adequately when you transplanted them, then it's just a matter of time before they spring back to life. Plants go into 'shock' when you repot them, especially if these were store bought herbs. Don't over water them, however, thinking that it will help them. Maybe just water once more (at your descretion) and relax. My basil did this when I put it out into my garden, and I thought I killed it. I watered it again, and just kept an eye on it, and a week or so later it was better.
