How do I build a fence in Harvest Moon DS?

I didn't manage it in Friends of Mineral Town either. I just can't figure out how to build that blasted fence!

All you have to do is get a material (i use logs) and put the on the light brown area on your farm around the pasture.

Fences stop the wild dog from getting to your animals as well as keeping them all in the same place so they are a good idea.

WARNING!!!

Material wood (lumber) rots over a certain amount of time, you cannot pick the rotten ones up, you have to cut them with your sickle.

Use... logs, stones, material stone or golden lumber.

Get lumber or mineral stone. Then pick it up and put it down in the area where you wish to make a fence (i.e. in a straight line).

Take cut lumber, stone, or golden lumber.  If you have a storage shed for that resource, remove some from the shed.

Once you have some material in your rucksack, move it to your hands.  Once you are carrying the material overhead, press A to deploy it.

As long as your fence does not have any gaps, animals will not walk trough it.  Please note, however, that you have to completely enclose your barns if you want them to be inside the fence.  There is a one space gap around the building that means they cannot be used as part of a fence themselves.
