How do I build a simple boat?

Question

I want to build a boat. I have minimal carpentry skills. I'd like to build a small rowboat or canoe type boat. It has to be lightweight and very simple to construct. All advice will be appreciated.

Here is a wonderful website with lots of easy to build plans for all kinds of boats from rowboats and canoes to pontoon boats, houseboats, cutters, tugs, you name it - they have it.

I have (over the years) purchased many of their plans and built several of their boats. They are good people, with good easy to understand plans and instructions.

The "key" element here, is that GlenL builds all the boats they sell plans for... They have builders there to help you "complete" your boat building project (long after the sale is made). This is critical - especially if you run into a snag - which even most of us do.

Their website is worth a look - the best I have ever seen - it is very informative, and will give you lots and lots of good information you can use - even if you don't buy or build from one of their plans.

By the way, it is much easier then you think.  Even if you have never built a bird house, you can build a really nice boat using their plans.

I know one guy that used an old wheelbarrow tub for a boat.  He really had a blast using it. He used a canoe paddle to get around.

Both are simple quick and easy. The JonBoat does well with a 5HP motor (I use a 1946 model!).
