How do I build a wooden fence?

So my dad said I can get a puppy when we get a fence. He doesnt know how to build one so he asked me to ask on yahoo. He said that his dad built one b4 but it sucked. Thanks!

Well, a couple of things to point out...

First, 'wood' fences can be among the more expensive types of fencing.

Second - puppies like to chew... even on wood fencing, hehehe.. so you may want to reconsider the type of fencing. Or take steps to keep the dog in, even if you use wood fencing.

Your dad will have to double check to see if he needs a building permit where you live, to put up a fence, or the rules regarding where he can put it.  (Can't enclose utility right-of-ways, for example).

The least expensive type of fence is made of wire, and steel T-posts, which are simply driven into the ground.  Not the prettiest, hehe, but you see a lot of them around farms.

Whether you make a wooden fence, or use vinyl, the posts will have to be dug in to below the frost line in your area.. and some building codes call for them to be as much as 4ft deep.

We built a dog pen next to the house here, and I sunk the 4x4 posts over 2ft deep (18 inches is the frostline here).  Then we used wire fence, and I even ran a small trench, and buried chicken wire.  The chicken wire is a 2 ft wide roll... I put one foot into the ground, left one foot above.  This kept the dog from trying to dig under the other fencing.  Then we dressed it all up with lattice work.  The wire fence isnt visible from the street, so it looks pretty nice, and didnt cost too much.

The easiest way is to use preassembled fence panels. Lowe's site has installation instruction. Buy them there or Home Depot.
