You could start by taking two hits of acid. Then you get a card board box and you put it on the roof of your house. Then you get 3D glasses and put them on. When the acid kicks in make sure you have knocked out all of the power in your neighborhood so it is completely dark. Then start inhaling helium rapidly and wallah you have your very own space station.

why build one when there is a perfectly good one in space just waiting to be stolen...

just move it to the other side of the moon or something so no one can see it and you wont have any problems.

Firebird is correct. NASA's early forays into space station development happened largely in the late 60s/early 70s. Originally their prototypes were made from Cardboardium Alloy an element earth is blessed with in abundance. For fuel they used Lysergic acid diethylamide. In order to achieve an orbital trajectory the space stations were launched from the roofs of ordinary suburban houses. Scientists also developed a specific safety glasses with one red lense and one blue lense in order to protect the astronauts from cosmic radiation and the heeby jeebies (eg: the sensation of little spiders crawling up your legs, visualisations of puff the magic dragon).

Firebird was wrong in one crucial point... There is no need to turn off the power in your entire neighbourhood, in fact it will inconvenience many people unneccesarily.
