  1. Rent a current Disney/Pixar cartoon which comes with a THX Optimizer.  It works great in setting up the proper color, tint, contrast, sharpness and brightness according to your light setup.

    Good luck!

  2. I have always found that just by turning the "contrast" setting down usually does the trick for a darker room.  You'll need to experiment.

  3. Get one of the calibration discs like Video Essentials and calibrate your set in the dark. It takes a bit to master using VE, but in the end it's well worth it!

  4. Well... "viewing pleasure in a dark room" usually means DVD's with the words "Naughty", "Hot" or "Throbbing" in the title.

But there are some calibration disks out there that have tutorials which will put up bars/test patterns and instruct you which setting to adjust and how to know when it is correct.

The disks are Digital Video Essentials, Avia and Sound and Vision Setup DVD.

You can Netflix at least one of these, but even the BluRay version of "Digital Video Essentials" is under $20.

Get one of these disks and go through the tutorials.

NOTE: Generally you are encouraged to have some kind of other light in the room. Without a bias light - the TV image will force your eyes to expand/contract/expand/contract/etc and this tends to produce headaches.  Some Televisions like the Phillips Ambilight include a back-light feature for this reason.
