How do I change an .avi file into a .wmv file?

I downloaded an .avi file off the internet because I wanted to insert it into Windows Movie Maker. But when I tried to import it into Windows Movie Maker, only the audio came up because it's an .avi file. I tried changing it into a .wmv file by typing the name of the file with ".wmv" after it but it wouldn't let me import a "corrupted file type". How do I do this the correct way so it actually works?

get the software from the link below, its really easy. its free but u can purchase a better version where u can convert for psp and ipod
