Question:

How do I change the appearance of my desktop icons?

I have noticed all of a sudden my icons have "colored boxes" around the words underneath the icon. The boxes are hiding my wallpaper photo. They used to be invisible - I'd have just the image with just the descriptive words/names. How can I get back to the original "look"? All I've been able to do is change colors or lighten 'em.

  1. Hi.

Follow these steps and don't touch anything if You don't know what it stands for...

    1. Right click on My Computer icon and go Properties.

    2. On new window go to Advanced tab [One of those seven things at the top of the window].

    3. Under Performance click settings and a new window will appear.

    4. Scroll down on new window and find next box (second from the bottom)

Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

When You find it make sure it's checked with green checker mark than apply and ok.

    That's it.

There's probably difference if You use XP Home and definitely on Vista.

(Vista - preferences not properties...and not sure for rest)

    Bye.

  2. Go to control panel display and appearance there you can customize your desk top or change back to the default colors.
