  1. If you don't already know how to do this process correctly, you need to buy the service manual for it.

This is not a very overly lengthy task to do, but it is essential you follow directions 100%.  All parts must be put in exact order, there are no shortcuts to this work.

Depsite other people's suggestions, doing this blind without a manual or previous successful experience for this is an ivitation for a improper installation.  That means expensive repair bills down the line.

If you have the manual, patience, mechanical aptitude, and the tools, go for it.  Otherwise, take it to a dependable outboard service shop that works on Johnson outboards and have them do it.

  2. take havoc's advice, the manual will more than pay for itself on this operation alone.  too many details and year-to-year model variations for a person to remember & type 'em all out here.

run into any specific questions or ambiguous instructions in the manual after you get started, just ask.

  3. 1st you should have the manuel but if you dont and feel like trying it you have to remove the lower unit when you remove it it sits under a cap  remove that and just keep removing things and put it back the same way its easy but do it with someone watching or helping you
