Question:

How do I change the shutter speed on my Canon EOS 40D?

Is it an automatic shutter?

I really prefer manual shutters but I'm unsure if I can set the shutter speed.

I can really only get a still photo if the flash is on and that obviously doesn't work for all photos.

Help?

  1. Why do people buy DSLR's if they don't know how to use them?  If you love the expensive piece of plastic you bought you could always read the manual that comes with the camera.  You should find a web page or better yet a book that shows you the basics of photography and learn.

  2. How do you change the shutter speed on the canon eos 40d? a simple enough question, you'll have to put the canon eos 40d in its manual, or shutter priority mode. Once in either of the modes, just turn the dial in either direction until you have the desired shutter speed. Use slow shutters to introduce signs of motion, and use fast shutter speeds to stop motion in its tracks. Oh, and all manual modes of digital single lens reflex cameras can control shutter speed separately in the manual mode. I do it all of the time. Oh, and another thing to note, you don't HAVE to use the flash in the manual mode. You don't have to use the flash in any mode. If the flash automatically pops up in auto mode just hold it down if that's not what you want. However, in manual mode it doesn't pop up at all unless you want to use it. Note, sometimes in low ligth the flash does help make the pictures look brighter, could be a good thing to use, and could be a bad thing

  3. Read the manual which came with your camera.

Basically, you want your camera in "M" mode or "TV" mode to change your shutter speed (the dial on the top).. then use the wheel to change the shutter speed, up or down.  If you are using M mode you'll also have to push the AV +/- button while turning the wheel, to change your aperture.

  4. Instead of asking this question, just check your manual...I am guessing that you can not read.So just check for either M or S and change the dial to it.And play with the thing that turns!Read the numbers and see if they are changing. But since u can not read how are you gonna read this!!!

  5. Foggy is close, but technically you can change the shutter speed in any of the "creative modes" (P, Tv, Av, M, A-Dep).  However, in Tv (shutter priority) and M (manual), you'll have the most control.  Where Foggy was wrong is that you don't have to press the Av +/- button while in M to change the aperture.  That only applies on the Digital Rebel line of cameras.  Your 40D has the rear command wheel, so you use that to change the aperture in M.  (For those that have the same question on their Digital Rebel camera, you can substitute Av +/- button while turning shutter command wheel for rear command wheel.)

In both Tv and M mode, you can use the shutter command wheel to change the shutter speed.  In P mode and Av mode, the shutter speed will change as you change the aperture by turning the shutter command wheel.  You can then use the rear command wheel to change the shutter speed up to + or - two stops.  In A-Dep mode, you can can change the shutter speed using the rear command wheel up to + or - two stops.

The advice to read the manual is good.  Perhaps a basic introduction to photography class would benefit you as well.
