How do I check the bios on my computer?

My computer does not have an operating system right now and when I try to put windows xp on it it says no hard drive is found. When I ask how to fix this several people said I should check the bios. How do I do this. I have very old hewet Packard pavilion. I think its about 10 years old. model 8396

  1. Usually checking BIOS involves pressing F8 as you turn on the computer. Is this possible for you?

    If you can, as the computer boots up it should have text in the corner or somewhere saying "Press So-and-So to enter setup" that leads to BIOS.
