How do I check the performance of my internet?

"bars" would refer to the signal between you and your wireless.  It has nothing to do with internet speed, as long as it's connected.

To see your internet speed, go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

You might want to try dslreport speed test.  This will give you a good estimate about your download and upload speed.
