Question:

How do I check transmission fluid on Saturn L200?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

I have a 2001 Saturn L200. I can find the little red cap to fill the fluid, but cannot for the life of me find the dipstick to check the level? Can anybody give me some pointers on where to locate it?

I'm a girl and don't know much (and I mean like very very little) about cars, so I need a simplified answer. I was wondering if I asked the oil change people to check it for me do you think they would? I've heard it's under the car somewhere so maybe that would be easier? Any ideas?

  1. wish I could help. I'm not familiar with that car, but it may be low in the back of the engine, and hard to see

  2. chicken is just about  right, but the check plug is on the side of the transmission,on the surface that the engine bolts up to more or less, or from that angle you can see it best. bu the is correct about the temperature and more than that eve, with the engine warm, remove that plug (an 8mm bolt if i remember right). as we aid before with the engine warm and running i little should dribble out. if you get a good stream, you pulled the wrong plug. it is easier to do from underneath, but pretty warm some times.

  3. the dipstick is on the left side of the motor (looking from the front) it should be a yellow oval handle in a black tube going to the bottom of the motor. the handle may be dirty and hard to see so look close.hope this helped.

  4. on your saturn there is no dipstick. it is checked by warming the fluid to 105 degrees (usually done by letting car run for 5 min from a cold start up) , cycling through all gears (park, reverse, ect), raising vehicle on hoist while keeping the car as level as possible, and removing a small plug on the passenger side bottom of the transmission. fluid should be level with the hole, if not you add through the little red cap. so as you can see, it is much easier to have a repair shop handle it, but make sure you pick one that is famillar with this fluid level checking procedure. the dealership charges more, but they usually know what they are doing.
