Question:

How do I choose a contractor to install a new furnace?

I am looking to replace my furnace, and air conditioning systems. Since this is going to be a expensive job, and it requires wiring, and dealing with dangerous components (wiring, gas, etc), I want to hire a reputable contractor.

So far I have gotten 2 estimates. One is from Sears, and the other is from a local contractor that has repaired and maintained the furnace for many years. The Sears estimate is much lower than the local contractor's (about $3000 less). However, I am wary of hiring a Sears contractor because it's such a big company and because I have read many complaints about Sears servicing. How can there be so much difference in prices? Should I get another bid and if so how can I pick someone who is reputable and trustworthy? I know very little about this process.

  1. Get as many estimates as you like.  The more the better.  Through out the top two and the bottom two. and pick the 3 or 4th from the top.

Generally one can't go by estimates.  Ask all the contractors for References of people he has done work for.

I knew of a company that would spend top dollar for adds their work was not that good.  Don't go by high class ads.

  2. yellow pages, under furnace.  possibly the bigger the ad, the bigger and more reputable the dealer.  skip sears, and get 3 quotes over the phone.  that's why they're there.
