How do I choose what training gloves to buy for boxing?

I mean the size,type, etc for beginners.

for bag work or for sparing?

for bag gloves you can either get 16 ounce gloves and you can get the real small ones for warming up

as for sparing gloves they need to have an elastic band that goes over the Velcro so you don't cut your opponent. and as for size of sparing gloves I would say 16 ounces too. unless you are going to fight in a bout in which they specifically say what weight gloves you will be using just get the heavier gloves for training. if you need the other ones later on then get them.

If you are on a tight budget, I'd go with these from Ringside.com.  They are quality gloves at a reasonable price $49.99.

If you want to get the best, go with the brand that pros use, Cleto Reyes training gloves (these are lace ups, so they are a little less convenient though they fit better).  These will set you back $119.99.

As for size and type, go with Hook-and-Loop options as they are much more easy to put on and take off.  

Boxing gloves really only come in regular size and junior/womens size for smaller hands.  Most people can go with regular gloves unless you have particularly small hands.

As for the weight of the gloves, I recommend 12 oz gloves if you are under 175 pounds and 14 or 16 oz if you are over 200 lbs.  Also check to see if your gym requires the use of 16 oz gloves for sparring, then you should get 16 oz if you plan to spar.
