Question:

How do I claim income tax back without a P45?

Hey..

During my gap year from Feb 2007 to Sept 2007, I was a full time till tart/shelf stacker.. I think I prob over-paid on income tax and I'm sure I'm entitled to claim something back.

I'm now a full time student - although, will probably be working (and earning) this summer. I have a P60 but cannot find a P45.

How can I find out if I'm owed anything? How can I claim money back? (and specifically without a P45)

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful!!

  1. You won't have form P60 for the period ending September 2007. The tax office and reference number involved should be shown on the form P60 you have. Contact them, and see if they have your leaving details on record. You don't need to send in form P60 if 2006/2007 details are on record, which they should be now. Just write in claiming your repayment.

Also ask if tax office has your full employment history for those two tax years, 6th April 2006 to 5th April 2008, even if it is only full-time education, or travelling abroad. Those details will be needed before you can get repayment.

  2. Just consult your  local  tax office   .. They will put you on the right lines

  3. You should have a P60 for the Feb 07 - 5 April 2007. The P45 should cover 6 April 2007 - Sept 07.

You can ask your employer for the P45 but if they have already issued it they cannot provide a duplicate. You can then ask them for a Statement of Earnings in place of the P45.

If they cannot/will not provide this, you can ask your HMRC office if they already hold the P45 details. If they do not, you can request that your tax office writes and requests this information directly from the employer.

Just send in a letter stating the dates of your employment, the full name & address of your employer and include the P60 you have. State you do not have P45 so you are requesting that the tax office requests the information directly from the employer concerned.

  4. It's all about P60s when it comes to claiming tax back so don't worry. However as you worked over two tax years you will need a P60 for the year ended April 2007 and April 2008. However if you did not work again after l;eaving you will need your p45 for the second 6 month period.

Hmrc should have a copy - call them and ask for one?

The simplest way is to calculate your own tax and repayment and send this to your tax office with copies of the P60s. Usually very quick at ending out a check (a couple of weeks).

In the year ended April 2007 you could earn £5,035 before you were liable to income tax. In the following year your "tax free" personal allowance was £5,225.

Alternatively you can fill in a form... i think it's a p50 and it should be on HMRC's website.
