How do I close a doorway that is no longer needed with drywall?

I installed a drywall patch over an existing doorway and I'm trying to patch it with little success. There is always a bump where the joints meet on the sides of the existing drywall. How to I get rid of it? No amount of sanding is making it level. Once it is close to level the tape shows through.

  1. When you placed the new dry wall, it must not have been even.It may be a big job, but purchase a long looped roller, and put paint in the mud and paint the wall.It will not show through. You will get a bumpy effect.

  2. Cut away at the joints and retape it

  3. You need to feather it out more than what you are. Start at the high point and feather down over 6" to 8".

  4. your mistake is trying to make it level  you need to taper the dryed mud to both joints  try using a larger mud trowel

  5. It is going to be something you are going to see because of the extra height of the tape.    But it is less noticeable when the additional coats of mud on top of the tape are spread out farther than the tape width.  Tape is 2" wide and you need some mud behind the tape to stick it to the wall. As thin as possible.   Now on top of the tape make the "patch" not 2" wide but  12 inches wide.   Similar idea would be a flat sandy beach that seems to go out a mile before it reaches the water at low tide...compared to a trench where the water is right there with the sudden drop.     You are trying for the sandy beach so one cannot tell where the hump is because it is such a gradual slope up to it.    I have seen the good drywallers start the mud from the middle of the sheet to the tape( so that is like 20" on each side of the tape)   You did not see the seams.    Besides, painters have tricks to make it less noticeable.  Use light colored paint on that wall, and eggshell sheen or flat paint.  It looks the worst when there is nothing in the room.  Once a chair or mirror or picture or rug is there the eye focus elsewhere.
