Question:

How do I connect a sprinkler to PVC?

I am installing an irrigation system for my home. I have designed everything out and have the items arriving tomorrow, however, with everything I've read, I have not been told how to install the head to the pipe.

I will be using 1" SCH40 PVC and Rainbird Rotors/Spray Heads. What connects the two of these together?

Thanks!

  1. You need to purchase pvc slip to threaded fittings. You should be able to find these at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

For example you would get a "T" with 1" slip X 1" slip X 1/2' male threaded. What you need depends on how the system was designed.

  2. get some poly pipe.

    use 1/2inch popy pipe.

you will need T fittings and reducers from one inch to 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch threaded on one side.

slip the other side in the Tee or 90 fitting.

use 3/4 inch fittings for rotors and the 1/2in poly fittings for misters.

they will have elbows with either 3/4 or 1/2inch on one side, and poly connector on the other side for you to flex the poly pipe onto it.

the same for at the bottom of the head.

use no more than 2 heads per poly line MAX

best to use just one poly line per head.

if you just hook up the heads to the PVC there will be no flexability for the head and if a mower runs over the head, the pipe will break clean off of the head.

and you willl have to fix it.

with the poly pipe you will have nothing to worry about. it is made for this.

good luck and hope this helps.

  3. If you are using schedule 40 pvc..it is quite ridgid, & you will need the fittings to match.  Most irrigations systems use 1" plastic pipe that is fairly flexible, & "Barb" fittings & stainless clamps are used.  Home stores sell all the fittings necessary for sprinkler lines & connections.  If you are using schedule 40 PVC, you will need regular plumber  fittings to glue on. ( I would prefer just using just plastic pipe. much easier to turn corners & attach to the sprinklers.
