My main computer has the router.

Is there a way to connect the laptop from the internet without buying another router?

(I heard there is a wire that you can buy to connect to the laptop's ethernet port and connect it directly to a telephone line. what is this wire called?)

  1. connect:  internet>modem>router> to pc's either ethernet or wireless or a combo. Use straight cable not crossover

  2. any cat5 cable will do, there should have been one with the router, but just plug the cable into the router, there are 4 ports in the back

  3. well mine has a yellow

cable so disconnect that from ur

computer and connect it to ur lap top

  4. Check if the router has extra port on it usually they have 4 but if you have only 1 you may need to purchase a network Hub or a network router one with with a wireless function since you have a laptop which may have wireless, if it isn't wireless get a cable cat5 /6 and connect it that way.

    good luck

    tee

  5. Since your asking now i can assume that this is a new labtop, it most likely has a Wireless Board in it. In the bottom Right Corner there with be a Picture of 2 computers.  Click on that. Then go to Your Router if you look on the back it should tell you the ESSID-  Which is basically your router name. Now that you know the name of your router on that screen that came up when you cliked on the 2 Computers Symbol Look for the One that has the Same Name as The ESSID on your router an press connect. If that doesnt work you can always Call Your Internet Provider and have them Unlock your Router so that it can be wireless

  6. IT HAS A #ON DSL EQUIP PUT IN LAB TOP AND YOU GO

  7. What you heard about using a cat 5 or 6 cable to connect to a telephone line was wrong. A telephone line is only usefull to a modem or a phone.

If your laptop does not have a regular rj14 telephone jack connector than I'm almost positive you have built in wireless.

so if your current router is a wireless router (good way to know is to see if it has antennas or if it says anything about wireless a/b/g or n) you can simply use the wireless network and skip the cords all together.

Otherwise connect a network cable (cat 5 or cat 6) from the ethernet port on your laptop to the back of your router next to a port your existing computer is on.
