Question:

How do I connect external speakers to device that only has a headphone output? Do I need an inline amplifier?

I have an under-counter kitchen radio/cd player that I would like to connect to external speakers, but the radio only has an output for headphones. I suspect that hooking speakers directly to the headphone output will not produce enough power for the speakers, so I think I need some sort of inline amplifier between the headphone output and the speakers. Would that be the proper way to do this? If so, where can I find a small inline amp for this purpose? I don't want to spend a lot of money on it, but I don't know where to find a cheap amp. I'd like to find an amp that has a 1/8" input and speaker outputs, but that is not necessary because I think an amp with RCA (red/white) inputs or speaker wire inputs would work. I could also probably convert RCA outputs or a 1/8" output to connect to the speakers, but simpler will be better. Please help me out. Thanks.

  1. Try it.  Sometimes the headphone output is powerful enough to drive speakers.  If it isn't, then the easiest thing is to just buy some powered computer speakers, if you can find some which sound good.

Or, go for a Sonic Impact T-Amp; they are said to sound very good.  Or, if you have space available, any old thrift store or yard sale stereo receiver could be used as an amp.

  2. the easiest way i can think is get a cheap pair of headphones ( dollar store) and replace the earbuds with speakers. or get a set of amplified pc speakers.

    battery or a/c operated.
