I have four sets of wires entering a junction box: three of them have black, white and ground, and the fourth one has black, white, red and ground. How do I connect them to a switch?

  1. Identify which wire is the power lead, where the other leads  go and the switch lead should be the one with the red wire.  This should be done by a qualified professional electrician in person. If the J box is in the ceiling where the fan mounts then I'll try to step by step for you.A short jumper for each wire connector is helpful.

    1. Connect all of the bare wires together and the one to the fan.

    2. Connect all of the whites together except the one from the cable with the red wire. Put a piece of black tape on this wire.

    3. Connect the white with the tape and all of the blacks except the one from the red cable together ( no jumper here).

    4. Connect the fan color to color to the bare, the white, and the red,  and the last black wire.

    5. Connect the switch, the white with the tape goes on the common to the switch.

    6. Connect the ground in the switch box, the red and the black leads go on the 2 switch terminals remaining.

    7. Test the system, and make any corrections. This should do it.

Be certain that the white wire in the switch cable is marked with tape to designate a line lead.  Good Luck, a 10 conductor count means a 20 cubic inch box if it's  #14 wire. If you have any problems, call a qualified professional electrician.
