How do I connect with lan cable?

My friend and I were trying to play Warcraft III and we connected everything and turned off the firewalls, and when I created a game, it said host unavailable etc. When he created, I couldn't even see his game. His laptop is Vista and I've got a Windows desktop pc... How do I get to connect them so I can play?

User cross-over cable to connect to each computer's ethernet port and try to ping. If you can ping successfully, there's no problem.

Either connect the PC:s to a hub/switch/router with normal LAN cables or connect the PC:s with a cross over cable from modem to modem. The latter does not require any external networking devices.
