Question:

How do I control who can access my savings account?

Back in 2004 I set up a savings account at Wells Fargo with assistance from my mom as I was under 18, meaning she could not only deposit to it but withdraw from it as well if necessary. As my part-time job was through my dad (and still do) she periodically deposits what I earn. Now that I am 19 (closer to 20) I would like to be the only person with access to my savings account. I do not put my parents in a position to where they are owed money from me, it is my money and mine alone. I recently set up a checking account last year, and I am the only one who has access to it. She has not taken anything from my savings, but has dropped the hint on several occasions as a way of acting in control, the reasons for being very petty and insignificant. That is the reason I'd like to limit access.

My question is, how do I go about this, and what is the minimum age for being in control of your own account? Is it 18 or 21? Do I need to call my bank or visit the office?

  1. I work for Wellsfargo. There is no way to just take one person off of an account so you need to go open a new account and transfer your money into it. This would either mean your mom would need your new account number if you want her to deposit money in it or you would need to keep both accounts open and transfer the money from the old account into the new account. You can open an account with only your name in most states at the age of 18. However there is a few exception in the states listed below.

    Alabama, 19

    Mississippi, 21

    Nebraska, 19

    Pennsylvania, 21

    Puerto Rico, 21
